Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

Behind and below your collarbone there is a small place called the thoracic outlet that houses the blood vessels and nerves that give function to your arm. Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) causes a wide variety of symptoms affecting the arm and hand. Symptoms often depend on the type of TOS you have; neurogenic (most common), venous and arterial (lest common). Patients with neurogenic TOS often experience pain, numbness/tingling and/or weakness in the hand and arm. Those with venous TOS have swelling and discoloration of the entire affected arm. Lastly, those with arterial TOS complain of pain, coldness and discoloration of the hand.
